-Late 2004-
While conducting exercises in the Iraqi desert, American troops received two major shocks in quick succession. The first was reverberations from something very large hitting the tank with terrific force. The second was when they found out what had attacked their tank.
The impact was caused by a rather large animal with a single horn that had been broken off during impact. The animal was dazed and stood long enough for the infantry to take several pictures and even a short video before it recovered enough to run away. The soldiers reported this incident when they returned to base, but it was not immediately believed. Upon seeing the piece of horn and the video, the Platoon Leader was slightly less doubtful, but still thought it was some sort of joke. When the same unicorn attacked again, this time injuring two soldiers and damaging several items in their camp before being shot down, he changed his mind and quickly sent the horn, film and video to his superiors, while having the body taken to port, along with a full account of what had happened.
The body arrived in not-so-good condition, but everything possible was done to preserve it. When a scientist was at last able to examine the evidence, he pronounced what the division who found it already knew. The unicorn existed after all. Naturally the scientist was very excited about this news, but he was given a direct order not to say anything, even to his fellow scientists. It seemed that the unicorn had shown unusual levels of intelligence for an animal and had even employed a sort of strategy to get what it perceived as intruders to leave, and the government feared the discovery of the unicorn on Iraqi soil would tip an already-delicate situation.
The scientists determined several interesting facts about the unicorn. It seemed to have near-human intelligence, an omnivorous digestion system, and a body designed to accept incredible amounts of adrenaline. The DNA was carefully examined, but even the scientists studying it did not expect what was to be discovered later.
-2005-
While the scientists were hard at work on the actual body, a few of their less well-known assistants were hard at work on research of the unicorn in history, hoping to find new pieces of history to test on the carcass. It was one of these assistants that discovered a small, low-traffic website which mentioned the Hunters.
When contacted, the Hunters responded that yes, they did indeed know that the unicorn existed, and yes, they still hunted them. Excited by this, the government brought several such Hunters into America to meet with the scientists and see the body. They identified the unicorn as a Karkadann, and provided the scientists with a few pieces of information they knew, and many more that they didn’t. The most stunning fact of all? Unicorns were everywhere.
The story was there from the very beginning. Almost. The best examples were the tapestries, the depictions of rather unpleasant attacks on unicorns. The unicorns were capable of human-level intelligence, though their intelligence was vastly different. It didn’t take them long to figure out that when a man armed to the teeth came stamping through the forest calling loudly for his furry friend to come see him, it wasn’t to invite them to an afternoon tea. They opted for seclusion, and when they faced extinction they chose the only way out—to change into the one creature humans had forbidden themselves to kill: themselves.
Unicorns did have something that could be termed “magic”—something to do with music, and though they were severely limited in the number of animals they could change their shape into, they could change. They adopted human form and spread out across the human population, raising their children into strict secrecy regarding their heritage. The few that dared change their shapes into other forms were often burned at the stake as werewolves, witches, and other creatures of the night. Soon none of them remembered how to shift, for it was difficult even with instruction, like learning a new language.
-2006-
The U.S. government commissioned the Hunters to start finding these human-unicorns, and to locate unicorns still in their natural bodies. It was tedious work, but the results seemed promising. If these human-mimicking animals could be controlled, they could function as spies like no others. Confident that it would have some live unicorns to experiment with soon, the government began building a new site to house these strange creatures, keeping everything as hush-hush as possible.
Their luck, however, was running out.
A few humans here and there throughout the world began to feel a call running through their veins. They had strange dreams, they became extraordinarily lucky, and sometimes a haunting melody they longed to repeat ran through their head: the remembrance of a language so long forgotten that it was almost dead. Eventually the silt might begin to settle, and the waters clear. Eventually the broken threads of lost memory might be mended, the proper key found to unlock the past and bind dreams and reality.
But would the awakening achieve completion before it was too late? Would the Hunters end the unicorns’ exile and transform it into slavery? Or would the unicorns rise again?
Let's find out.
